We are back to our school routine now and the kids are liking what we are studying so far. We, of course, are reading daily and have enjoyed our new books. The two books we have read lately are new to all of us, including me. We just finished King of the Mound by Wes Tooke and we really enjoyed it. It’s the story of a boy that had polio in the 1930’s and how he overcame obstacles with the help of a friend and a baseball pitcher named Satchel Paige. Satchel Paige was a new person for us as we don’t know much about baseball, but we found the story very interesting and it kept our attention to the very end. We were actually on edge to see how it ended.
We will finish Ann and the Island Storm by Elspeth Bragdon tomorrow. We have really enjoyed this book about Betsy who visits her grandmother on Bleak Island. She meets Ann who is the lighthouse keeper’s daughter. Ann resents Betsy a little as she thinks that Betsy is like the “summer people” that come to the island to picnic. But, the girls spend time together and learn that though they are very different and live totally different lives they can still be friends.
Bethany has continued to bake – another cherry pie and pumpkin pies. Everyone loves this as they know they can have pie every night after dinner. Bethany said she thinks she will be in a baking mood for a little while longer and has even planned a little for some Christmas baking.
