The Twenty-Four Days Before Christmas – Day 3

Today our special thing was to make spice ornaments for our kitchen tree. The kids had fun, but it was very messy and the dough was really sticky. Maybe we didn’t do it exactly right – when you have several kids adding ingredients it’s easy to make a small mistake. But, they turned out great and we will put them on the tree tomorrow. It said to let them sit and dry for 3-5 days or if you want you can bake in a 200 degree oven for an hour. Baking was our choice. They looked good when they came out of the oven and tomorrow we will put stings in and hang. I will add the recipe here in case anyone wants to try making some.

No-Bake Spiced Dough Ornaments:

1 cup ground cinnamon

1 tablespoon ground cloves

1 tablespoon ground ginger

1 tablespoon ground nutmeg

1 cup applesauce

2 tablespoon white craft glue

A few tablespoons of all purpose flour – just to knead the dough with

Directions:

Combine the dry ingredients (except flour) in a mixing bowl. Add the applesauce and glue.

Mix all the ingredients with your hands until they are mixed thoroughly.

Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to approximately 1/4-inch thickness.

Cut dough with cookie cutters into various shapes. Bore a hole in the top of each ornament with a straw.

Lay ornaments out flat to dry at room temperature for 3-5 days turning often or bake in a 200 degree oven for 1 hour.

The Twenty-Four Days Before Christmas – Day 2

Today our special thing was to get new Christmas socks. It was a little different than last year because I bought three pairs of socks and then a box that had The Twelve Days of Christmas Socks. It was a box with twelve doors and behind each door was a pair of socks. So, the kids could take one of pairs I bought that they could see or they could take a chance with the box of socks and open a door not knowing what they would get. As I figured, they all wanted to open a door of the box and see what socks they got. They had a lot of fun doing that and it was a little different from our usual picking out their favorite pair of Christmas socks.

We also continued reading our book The Christmas Doll by Elvira Woodruff today. This is one of our favorite Christmas books. We read it every year and will probably keep doing this till everyone is grown! It is such a sweet story and it doesn’t seem to matter how many times we read it we still love it. It was a good day.

These are some of the bags they painted yesterday all dry and ready to fill.
