The Twenty-Four Days Before Christmas – Day 18

Today our special thing was suggested by Bethany. She said we should have a discussion kind of like we have done several times this Christmas season, but this time we will tell our favorite Christmas books and talk about why we like them. We all agreed. So, that was our special thing for today. I’m not going to list many books, but we spent more than an hour talking about Christmas books and why we love them and sometimes even remembering the first time we read them. I won’t really say much about the books, but tell a little about why each girl liked her special book.

Caroline said one of her favorites is Alabaster’s Song by Max Lucado. She said she loved the part where the tree top angel would sing to the boy, but his parents could not hear him singing. Then when the boy grew up and became a parent his little boy heard the angel, too. It was a sweet book and we all like it. It is a picture book and fairly short. We love picture books, too.

Aria said one of her favorites is The House Without a Christmas Tree by Gail Rock. In the book, ten year old Addie wants a Christmas tree more than anything for Christmas, but her father forbids it. Addie can’t understand why and tries every year to talk him into getting one, but he always has an excuse. Aria said the part she likes best is when Addie wins a Christmas tree at school, but when she brings it home her father is furious. So, in the night Addie gets up and takes the tree to a needy family that doesn’t have a tree and leaves a note that it’s from Santa.

Bethany named several and one being The Christmas Doll by Elvira Woodruff. She said she loves it because of the way the older sister loves and takes care of her younger sister. She loves the way the older sister – Lucy – worked in a doll shop sewing hearts on the dolls for Christmas so she could provide a place for the girls to stay at night. She thinks the book is really touching and we all do. We have read this book at Christmas for so many years that I can’t remember the first time. We all love it.

Bethany also named The Special Guest by Lee and Donna Allen. One thing she really likes, and we all do, is that the book takes place in the city we live in. That makes it kind of neat as we recognize places in the book. Bethany said one thing she really liked about the book was that the family was entertaining an angel unaware. There were many other reasons she loves this book, but I just can’t write everything the girls said. It is also a special book to all of us.

Tess likes A Full House by Madeleine L’Engle and that is one of my favorites. She likes all the commotion going on and how the family jumps in to help when needed. There is a lot going on in their house on Christmas Eve. It is a short book but worth reading.

Also mentioned was Gideon’s Gift by Karen Kingsbury – great book. Also, Christmas In The Country by Cynthia Rylant & Diane Goode was a favorite along with The Twenty-Four Days Before Christmas by Madeleine L’Engle. There were so many books mentioned and talked about, and I’m so glad Bethany thought of doing this today.
